What is “STEP-UP!”?
Who are the Coexistence Is Possible?
“STEP UP!” is a three-week project established by SCI HELLAS in cooperation with refugees in Athens.
This project occurred from the 4th till the 23th of June 2019, involving 9 short term European Volunteering Service volunteers from Ireland, who came to help fight racial stereotypes and spread peace. The implementation of the project is based on inclusion, equality and non-discrimination.
During those three weeks the group created with the Coexistence is Possible group a theatrical play called “Love Has No Borders”.
Coexistence is Possible is a group of volunteers from all over the world, who want to express respect, love, cultural mixing, solidarity and sharing through several projects.
The aim of these projects is to foster people understanding and share all these concepts through creative activities!
The play is the story of an African refugee falling in love with a European woman, the reactions of each member of the woman’s family, and the positive development all the way from racist ideas to mutual understanding and acceptance.
What are the aims of this project?
This project is a follow up to the “Black and White” performance which ran March 2019 and is made possible within the European Solidarity Corps program.
This project enhances the awareness of individuals on racism, social issues, cultural conflicts, and other issues that are prevalent in Greece but also all over the world. We worked together to understand the importance of creating forms of unified coexistence and equality policies within the EU member states and the local communities here in Greece.
Thanks to its multicultural group this project aimed to develop teamwork, solidarity, respect for diversity and inclusion, share knowledge, experiences and ideas.
In the end, we hoped that the volunteers ended the project with the motivation to decrease the prejudices and stereotypes placed upon certain groups, as well as train and motivate participants and any individual involved in resolving conflicts, crises, and any other forms of negative situations that may appear, be them physical or verbal. Also that they will be more aware and socially active in their day to day life.
