During 2014, some EVS volunteers in the office of SCI Hellas (Minh, from Vietnam; Galya, from Ukraine; Tiago, from Portugal; and Blas, from Spain) developed three different workshops in English to run with high school classes.
The topics of the sessions are:
- multiculturalism through food
- volunteering as a means of civic participation
- stereotypes and anti-racism.
The sessions are enlisted in a portfolio and the materials are ready to be used. They include group games, energizers, reflection exercises and team-building games.
Our volunteers, together with Martina (the EVS coordinator), performed these sessions in two schools: one in Ilion and the other in Nea Smirni. The results were fairly positive. Both our volunteers and the students enjoyed a lot this activity. The level of participation and enthusiasm of the students was surprising for our volunteers, as was their general mastering of English.
This is an activity we wish to expand this year, for it provides a direct contact between our volunteers and the Greek youngsters, allows our volunteers to experience the role of facilitating non formal education activities and the students to try new ways of learning, reflect and discuss topics that are seldom addressed in schools and practice communication in English.
